The desirable profile of prospective professional counsellor for College /technical institutes -must have the ability to:

Definition of Professional Counseling services – is the application of mental health, psychological, or human development principles, through cognitive, affective, behavioural or systematic intervention strategies. By using these strategies, professional Counselors address wellness, personal growth. career development issues, as well as mental health pathology. Professional Counselors have graduate training and education and often work in schools, colleges and universities, career agencies, substance abuse facilities, and clinics and hospitals.(UNESCO,WHO)

23, 24 &25 on counseling

To develop understanding of the developmental needs of young people aged 11-25, focusing particularly on the process of adolescence. This training will offer the opportunity to study, critically discuss, practice, review and evaluate proactive counseling approaches specifically orientated to working with young people, which differ from approaches used with children and adults and which are underpinned by Youth Access core values and principles, and informed by Youth Access Quality Standards for Counseling.

Campus Based Counseling Centre.

The Student professional Counseling and Career Centre is staffed by professional counselors whose primary goal is to facilitate the personal, social, academic, and vocational development of college /university students. To fulfill this role, the Student Counseling and Career Centre provide the following programs and services:

For assistance for emotional difficulties interpersonal problems, or stressful life situations.
Major depression increases the likelihood of substance abuse, impairs functioning at school, and influences an individual’s subsequent development in negative ways.  Depression can also co-occur with other disorders, including physical illnesses and other mental disorders, such as anxiety and eating disorders. It is important to have mental health services available on college campuses for students who need help.

GROUP DEVELOPMENT – Group programs that provide support, develop skills, and aid in self-improvement in specialized areas are announced and offered throughout the year. Educational and informational programs are also part of the Student Counseling and Career Centre’s activities. There is a nominal registration fee for some group programs.
CAREER COUNSELLING – Career planning and counseling are available on an individual and group basis. Testing and assessment of interests, abipersonality are available as well. There is a nominal charge for testing services.

CAREER RESOURCE CENTRE –To complement the career planning process, the Career Resource Centre maintains information on more that 230 occupations, a selection of university and community college calendars and career-related resource books and materials. The CRC is organized on a self-help basis, but a resource person is available to assist you on a drop-in basis.

CAREER option suitability PROGRAM – The Career Mentor Program provides an opportunity to meet with a professional working in a specific field. The counselors may take initiatives and arrange such inter actions with the career seekers students. The program involves exploring the world of work to gain a realistic view of a specific career Counselors undertakes assessment of individual student’s potential and abilities to matching job opportunities

REFERRAL AND CONSULTATION – In addition to providing direct service to students, counselors are available to provide referral information and consultation service to other members / employers community.

TRAINING – The Student Counseling and Career Centre provides placements and supervision of students who are pursuing/are interested in counseling as a profession. Therefore, during the regular academic session, students assist our professional staff in the provision of direct service to students.
Students are encouraged to call the Student Counseling and Career Centre or drop by the main office to inquire about programs and services. Students who have not seen a counselor before may come during our drop-in times to see a counselor for a short introductory interview. Students will then be directed to individual or group counseling, career services, or referred elsewhere.
